Living in Missoula...

topic posted Mon, July 23, 2007 - 9:39 AM by  saguaro
Hi...I posted here about my fall move to Missoula before, but I have more questions!

I've been trying to find a place to live via the internet (for October, at the latest November), and having a bit of a frustrating time...how easy/hard has it been to find a place to live in Missoula? I have a small dog (9 lbs.) and a cat, and that complicates things a little. I've looked at Rent.com and some other apartment sites and found 1 or 2 things, but they both have told me they have waiting lists, etc. I've looked online at the Missoulan a few times too, but they seem to want folks for immediate occupancy...totally understandable. I kinda need to find something before I land in Missoula, so I'm a little frustrated at the moment...

By the way, my posting this is not a way to try to "bum" a place to stay from any of you, just need some helpful suggestions, if you have them. Thank you in advance!

PS..also when does the snow typically start flying in Missoula? Don't want to move in a raging snowstorm! ;-)

hey My daughter lived in a basement apartment with two cats that was owned by a lady that works at which is a rental property management place. The basement apartment was very reasonable and the upstairs renters had a dog with puppies. Her business was in the shopping center where budget tapes is and the China Buffet, you go in the door that is in the corner of the plaza between the China Buffet and the My Sisters Second (or what ever that dress store is). I will try and find the name of it out from my daughter and post it for you. I call her at work and they put me on hold and I myself have to leave for work.....I have a bad memory, but will try and get back to you with that information tomorrow morning when I get home.... By the way, if it's relevant...I live in Georgia, near Atlanta at the moment, so this will be a LONG distance move...the reason why I'm trying to do everything via the internet, etc. I visited Missoula in June, and will be going back, if necessary, to take care of things in Sept...

Saguaro, first off congrats on making the decision to move to zoo town. If I remember correctly at one point you were thinking of moving to Helena, glad you chose Missoula. Anyways, if I was you I might try to find like an apart-hotel of some sort for a month and then get sorted from there. Everything in Missoula works better in person, though I definitely understand your desire to have it taken care of before you get there. But remember, you already made the choice to go there, She'll take care of the rest....I ain't bullshitting you either.

Also, try getting in touch with these people:

          professionalproperty.com/

A lot of people in town don't like them cause they're kind of dicks and will take your deposit at the drop of a dime. On the upside, their name says it all, they are very professional and won't fuck you over if you don't fuck them over. I always had good luck with them. There's one lady who works there, or used to, who I think was called Carla. No bullshit to her, she looks like a mountain lion, but she's a straight shooter and will help you if you're not being stupid or acting like some dumb hippy punk, lol.

          Also, here's another place:

          www.lambros.com/locations.php

I never rented from them. Everyone calls them Scambros. Says it all. The only other place I can remember is called the Dwelling Place, but I can't find a number for them. A friend rented from them for years and had nothing but good things to say.

          Good luck!

    more PM's to try:

    carasproperties.com/
    www.gcpm-mt.com/index.htm
    grizzlypm.com
    www.triwestpm.com/

I looked up all those daily as well as preferred property and lambros. ended up getting one out of the missoulian through a private party though. it can be kind of frustrating finding a house (or an apartment) but for sure shop around. there are lots of over priced apartments and a lot of real cheap, good houses here in town. pets shouldn't be too much of a problem, just about everyone in missoula has one!

Also, you can try checking out the Missoulian- I'm pretty sure people still use the newpaper there. It might give you a better sense of the market. Back in college, most of the people who I knew that rented had a cat or a dog. Seems like its doable.

I hope you find a place before the student rush in August.

We are very pleased with our property management group Gatewest. We saw lots of different places for rent - most of them pretty beaten up. Gatewest's were the cleanest by far and they've been super easy to deal with.

      Thank you, Kimberlee...and everybody else!

Life seems to be getting in the way here, and I may not make it until spring 2008...totally bummed about that. I could probably move in Dec. or Jan., but I rather imagine the snow would be flying about then...not the best travelling weather. I may still make it in Nov., but it's looking unlikely at this time. Still am excited about moving there, and have been following up on all of your suggestions.

When does the snow typically start flying in Missoula?

Well there's usually some early storms around Thanksgiving- short and heavy. But *normally* the snow doesn't begin to really fly till around Christmas and after and snowy season can last until April or later. But then, you never can tell. It COULD snow next week!

        Does that answer your question??

Yes it does, Mel, and thank you! I lived in CO for many yrs. and it was about the same there. I figured it would be about the same in Missoula, but thought I'd ask anyway...
